March 31st, 2008 This from our friends at the William H. Seward Yacht Club: The Wm. H. Seward Yacht club is once again bring up riggers Keith Stone and Ray Hines from Marine Service Center in
Seattle in May to
work on boats. This will be the 4th year we have sponsored their trip North to help us out. It
turns out Keith is able to come up a few days early this year and is looking for some other rigging and installation work. He
has been an electronics installer for MSC and he is also a master rigger. If any of your members are interested in rig
tunes and inspections, installation of standing or running rigging, or getting all of their lights and instruments working
again, Keith can help them out. He is available on the afternoon of Monday, May 12 through
Wednesday the 14th. He would need a berth to sleep in during that time. His rate
per hour is $50. Please let your club members know that this opportunity is available to
them and have them send me an email with their needs and contact info so I can coordinate the schedule with Keith. Hope all is going well for you in Homer, John John.G.Baker@conocophillips.com
March 4th, 2008 The Alaska Marine Safety Education Association will hold a six and a half-day, U.S. Coast Guard approved Marine Safety Instructor Training
(MSIT) April 1 through 7 in Seward, Alaska. "This is AMSEA's premier train-the-trainer course, designed for anyone interested
in teaching marine safety and survival to commercial fishermen, professional mariners, teachers, children, government agency
personnel or others." For more info, see their website -- go to our Links page to find it! While you're
there, you can also find out about the National Safe Boating Council Contest for Kids.
February 27th, 2008 The February 23rd skippers' and regular
meetings were well attended by a boisterous crowd. Enthusiasm ran high, with a lively exchange of viewpoints on several issues. Two
changes to the sailing schedule were agreed upon: the Cooney Cup overnight race to Seldovia and back will be held on June
14th & 15th, and the Jakolof Bay clambake (or general beach BBQ) will be held on August 16th. A cruise to Bear Cove with
an overnighter is also planned, as is an additional Saturday race, but the dates have not been chosen. And remember,
the schedule is subject to change again at any time!
The Coast Guard Auxiliary is deciding whether to hold their "Sailing
& Seamanship" class in Homer this spring. The course lasts 6-7 weeks, meeting for about two hours twice
per week, evenings. Those interested should contact Craig Forrest at 235-5248 (wk) or 235-7479 (hm). This is a boating
skills and safety class, not a sailing class. Those interested in sailing instruction in Homer should check out
